Re: Tokyo Gore Police

Four more fake commercials from Tokyo Gore Police were added two days ago to the official subsite for the movie; click on 「広告」 (kôkoku) - the sixth tab on the right - on the site's main page. As I previously mentioned, the fake commercials in the movie were directed by Noboru Iguchi and Yûdai Yamaguchi.

This looks great. The effectswork is definitely amazing. Too bad they shot it on such a cheap looking and lousy format. Video is killing low budget film. All the stuff they made would look so much better on film. To me it's such a waste, all those great effects and they didn't even bother to shoot in on film. It's a shame.

Re: Tokyo Gore Police

It's not as much of a problem with the format as it is with the lack of skill. But since the skill is not there, TGP would definitely benefit from film. It would give it a more cinematic look which is exactly what TGP needs.

The cinematography is a problem in TGP in general, as well. They hardly even manage to point the camera in the correct direction. And, the people who thought fast motion could compensate for incompletent show, and that a combination of frenzy editing and maniacal characters would result into something more than terribly pretentious coolness, ought to be shot.

The good news is that a lot of the effects work is indeed terrific. The last 30 minutes is loaded with good ideas. The Verhoeven esque commercials shown throughout the film are also terrific. The blood is plenty, but it's not disturbing. The film-makers are in such a hurry to get into splatter that it leaves no room whatsoever for any kind of emotional impact. The violence doesn’t hurt the audience. In fact, there isn’t really that much in-depth gore, its mostly just surface.

Fun trash, but falls quite far from it's potential (that is a stylish Gore Blade Runner).

This one was ridiculously over the top, but fun as hell. I will be picking up the DVD for sure.

You called it correctly. It's a load of fun to watch and I can recommend it but I wish it was shot better. A good film but missed the chance to be a great one.

Re: Tokyo Gore Police

I am a bit worried because I don't really like "digital video filmmaking", which is an oxymoron. I will however, try to enjoy the movie and appreciate its merits regardless. Hopefully, I'll watch it tonight and see for myself.

I didn't even finish this. Too amateurish for my tastes. Did anybody else feel the same way?

Above is a still of Sayako Nakoshi in Yoshihiro Nishimura's Tokyo Gore Police (Tôkyô zankoku keisatsu) spin-off short "63 Minutes Later" ("63-fun-go"). The short is to be included on the extras disc of the Japanese DVD release of Tokyo Gore Police. It's scheduled to have its world première at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival (Yûbari Kokusai Fantasutikku Eigasai) - "YIFFF" for short - in Hokkaido, Japan on February 27th, as part of the festival's "Deep Core Night 2" ("Dêpu koa naito 2") event - which this year has been dubbed "Tokyo Gore Night" ("Tôkyô zankoku naito").

Re: Tokyo Gore Police

I liked it.

The cinematography was too "digital" looking and looked like lesser HD at best, good DV at worst. I wish they had gotten a good 24p camera, which on DVD is pretty difficult to tell apart from 35mm (the Death Notes were shot in that). The set ups weren't bad, it was entirely the format that mars the experience.

Nonetheless, I relatively overlooked that and found a very fun and thematically rich film. It had the cartoony, wet "ultragore" of Peter Jackson's Dead Alive mixed with very Japanese sexual fetishism and take-no-prisoners political satire very akin to that of Trey Parker and Matt Stone but aimed at Japanese politics rather than American. Everybody, from right wingers to shallow, materialistic school girls to the sex industry in Japan to China, gets mercilessly gunned down here in a hilarious fashion. Most of this humor will be above those who don't know much about Japanese culture, though.

Re: Tokyo Gore Police

in a word - no.

Machine Girl was a hoot, but this one - sorry guys. Didn't help that it was shot on poor video. Borrowed some from Verhoven - Starship Troopers commericals and the privatized police force from Robocop. No tension, not much action, just bizarre effects that while non CGI were just not all that much fun. That's what the movie lacked for me. Took itself way too seriously.
