Excellent film (which was greeted with extreme dislike on every kungfu board, as I recall - on the other hand, I can't stand the Chang Cheh films, so this is defienetly a queston of taste )

Really? I got so bored of that place and the incredibly inane rhetoric...I banned myself! I do look in from time to time, but it has become without a doubt one of THE most tedious, and useless, Asian themed forums on the 'net.

Anyhoo...happy belated birthday for the other day and keep going with the fine Shaw chronicles! I'd join in more frequently, but I have a wedding and some immigration plans to contend with for later in the year...and haven't picked up a Shaw title since DDDHouse threw out MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE cheap some time back. I have a lot of the exploitation stuff, but simply no time to write 'em up as I'd like for; plus I'm going back and trying to catch up with some South Korean and Thai films I've previously missed since so far this year there's been a positive dearth of product from my favourite region (Hong Kong) - only HIMALAYA SINGH, CRAZY N' THE CITY and SEOUL RAIDERS have even remotely piqued my antennae so far...

You're all doing a fine job for the team! Keep up the great work!

Re: Another attempt at a Shaw Brothers thread

KISS OF DEATH ***1/2 (out of 4) It took me about 20 minutes to get involved in this rape and revenge flick, but in the end I was blown away. It's worth it just for the continuous grind of sleazy nightclub music! Chen Ping is amazing, as she was in THE SEXY KILLER--does anything else in her body of work measure up?

TEMPTRESS OF A THOUSAND FACES *** This one is nuts alright. A female master criminal is challeneged by a tenacious reporter. Hard to describe how improbable (and inappropriate) parts of this are. Celestial definitely blew it making this VCD only. Short and sweet.

WEB OF DEATH *** I usually only like the martial arts films with wacky supernatural elements, and this is a perfect example. The Five Venoms Clan has a tarantula that spits poison. Everyone wants it, and the obligatory power struggle ensues. Colorful and entertaining.

Sorry man, didn't meant to bring you down, it's just that I bought it hoping for a 70s-urban-italianpolicefilmstyle action film (made in HK), and all I got was a lame brained police recruit film (which is like I described in my earlier post - if I had known you already payed for it I would have formulated my description a little less harshly... )

I heard good things about CRAZY... but not about the others - I won't go into one my modern-HK-cinema-bashing rants, but the state of the industry is terrible, at least compared to what used to be going around there...

Well, each to his own. I still find a lot to enjoy in modern HK cinema, but that seems to largely just be me and a handful of friends these days. But everyone likes something different, and one man's trash is another's treasure...so respect for the Shaws stuff and we'll agree to disagree on the rest...

http://www.asiandvdguide.com/shaw_brothers.html

wow, not one horror in it (well, theres one, enchanting ghost, but it's already out + its crap)... congratulations, celestial. they'll put out only one Kwai Chi Hung film, Intrigue in Nylons... No Payment in Blood, no Killer Constable... Ahhh, fuck' em...

lost souls will be out soon, apparently its the pinneacle of shaw exploitation... we'll see.

respect man, respect! Frankly,if You show me a better forum on HK-dvds I will pay your DDDHouse bills for two years.

This SB-list is indeed disappointing for horrorfans (personally,I hoped for BLACK MAGIC 2). LOST SOULS will be VCD-only as far as I know,so that says it all really. I'm looking forward to BIG BAD SIS though,if it is what I think it is (Sexy Killer type action?)

It's a Sun Chung directed spin off of the Chen Kuan Tai films Teahouse and Big Brother Cheng. By all acounts, it's a lot of fun and has never had a video release. BTW, like nearly every list, this is from Celstial. Many of the films they list as dramas and the like would fall into thrillers. They don't really know the films, the genres are just copied from the old Shaw Brothers catalog of about 20 years ago which didn't make a lot of sense in some cases. AKA, all is not lost.

Edit-BTW, Killer Constable is a fave of mine as well. The US release was cut. And the film looks AMAZING letterboxed. It's been remastered already, so we should see it next year. Also, the Chang Cheh swordplay film Invincible Fist is the original version of the story.

WTF? You mean to tell me that they are actually going back and releasing a DVD of a VCD-only title? I actually kind of liked ENCHANTING GHOST. Very similar to BRIDE FROM HELL. Hopefully the DVD won't have synth or techno music dubbed onto it. Maybe there's hope for a DVD of TEMPTRESS OF A THOUSAND FACES.

I'm looking forward to BIG BAD SIS, too. Did I overlook something, or are there no Inoue Umetsugu movies for 2005? Not even THE BRAIN STEALERS?
