Re: any word on mondo macabros snake sisters?
The Carlo J. Caparas Debate has been raging ever since he was declared National Artist for the Visual Arts.
A National Artist status is a big deal in the Philippines. Eddie Romero was awarded one for film; the late Lino Brocka and Lamberto Avellana are also National Artists. There are very few awarded. ...which brings us to Caparas. As a director, he's regarded as a joke. His output since the Seventies has been komik adaptations and a spate of "Massacre" movies, and has recently moved into TV series. However, as an author of komik stories he's well-regarded, most notably for his "Panday" character, a mythical blacksmith played by Da King, Fernando Poe Jr, in a quartet of films in the late 70s/early 80s, and last year by Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr in his 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival comeback film. Caparas was NOT a komik artist, but an author, and as such the National Artist award for Visual Arts seems like a token nod to his ability to market himself as a successful brand name. It's this crass self-promotion, plus his embarrassing back catalogue of B and C films, which has led to the call to strip him of his accolade. |
